It’s spring now and that means it’s time to deep clean! This year, do more than your average tidying tasks. Take your spring cleaning to the next level with these 5 tips.

1. Clear out all the junk

Every home has at least one junk drawer. If you say yours doesn’t, you’re probably lying. In fact, if you’re as much of a hoarder as I am, you might have junk everywhere. Drawers, closets, nightstands, that rack under the coffee table that’s supposed to be for magazines … spring is the perfect time to clear out all the stuff you don’t want anymore.

It doesn’t need to be all at once. Even just cleaning out one little drawer next to your bed can be enough for a day. Start small—how about purses and wallets? My purse is definitely a dumping ground for junk I come across throughout my day. Throw out any old receipts, empty lotion and Chapstick containers, and trash. Gather any loose change and put it in your wallet or in a change jar. Only keep the essential items for when you leave the house. You’ll leave feeling so much lighter.

Follow the same process for junk-filled spots in the rest of your home. Decongesting a bit might even help you find some old treasures … Oh, is that where I put my Gameboy Advance?!

2. Cleanse your body

Spring clean your insides. That sounds a little weird but think about it! If you haven’t been feeling great in your body, make some healthy changes this spring. We may let ourselves go a bit in winter, but spring is the time to bring us back. Drink more water, try a new diet, and get into a workout routine for starters. Start a sleep schedule and stick to it. If you haven’t been faithful to your New Years’ Resolution, redeem yourself with spring cleaning!

You can take your cleanse a step further by literally trying new cleanses. Water, fruits, and exercise will naturally clear out toxins in your body, but there are also juices and teas that can help you detox. Usually, you can find a daily supplement that will last for about a week or so.

However, the cleanse should be exactly that—a supplement, not a replacement. You should continue to eat healthy meals with your cleanses. Also, be careful and do your research, because some commercial cleanses aren’t as healthy for you as they’re advertised to be.

3. Get a fresh start in your closet

Is your closet feeling a little stuffed? Or are you feeling a bit blah in your wardrobe? Make some room for new fashion favorites by cleaning your closet. This may seem hard if you’re attached to your clothes (like I am), but you got this.

A good rule of thumb is to take out anything you haven’t worn in over a year. You’re kidding yourself if you keep saying you’ll wear it again, because, at this point, you probably won’t. This is also a good chance to replace damaged clothes. You might have loved that shirt you’ve had since freshman year of high school, but seriously, it’s time to retire.

Where you send these old clothes is very important. Some overly-damaged items can go in the trash. You can make some money in a yard sale or by selling clothes to places like Plato’s Closet. But, consider donating the majority of your haul. Local shelters will always take things like used coats and shoes. If you aren’t sure what is accepted, you can call to ask or see if there is a list anywhere. For more options, here is a list of places for donating clothing.

4. Organize your day-to-day life

If you don’t already own a planner or calendar, now is the time to get one. The first step in staying clean and clutter-free is to organize your belongings—do the same with your daily life.

I like to use a planner that holds both monthly calendars and daily logs. Mark important dates in the calendars, such as due dates, birthdays, events, or interviews. Write out daily to-do lists in the log sections—compare your lists to any due dates coming up to be sure that you get the work done within the right time frame! There’s no better feeling than crossing off your to-do’s one by one.

You can also invest in some organizational tools for your home, such as bookshelves, hanging shoe racks, storage bins, photo books, etc. Everything should have its own place, and make sure these places stay tidy! An organizational tool is useless if it isn’t … organized.

Staying organized will make life seem a little less hectic and unpredictable. Check out these 10 additional tips from really organized people.

5. Finish any home repairs or projects

Life is busy, and sometimes this means having to procrastinate on home improvements. Make time this spring to get those improvements done. Fix the leaky sink you’ve had a bucket sitting under for a month. Hang those picture frames in your bedroom. Paint the kitchen walls. Redecorate for a better living space that you look forward to coming home to every day!

If money has been stopping you from completing your projects, start budgeting with them in mind. Plan to put aside a portion of your money every few weeks for any supplies you’ll need or teams you’ll need to hire. Have a goal in mind for when you want the projects finished, but make sure it’s reasonable so you don’t get overwhelmed.

Live your best, cleanest life this spring.
