Photos

Photos are a great way to decorate your apartment walls! You can use family photos, or photos that you have taken and really appreciate, or even photographs that a professional has taken. You can print them out at your local pharmacy after you have handpicked them or you buy them from a photographer, in the size you want or need them at. They can reflect your family, your friends, your life, your hobbies, your interests, and more!

You can frame them, you can just stick the prints up on your wall, you can make a collage, you can hang them from clips, you can even have a computerized photo frame that goes through your favorite photos on a continuous stream. They can remind you of home, of your friends, of your passions. They are easy ways to make your space your own. And photos are generally light enough not to damage your walls.

Lights

Another great way to decorate your apartment walls is to hang up lights! It will brighten up your space and keep your spirits high instead of low. There are so many options from twinkling fairy lights to vintage incandescent style bulbs to lights in flashing colors. Whatever the vibe of your space or your mood, you should be able to match them with some lights. And if ever the lights start to bother you, you can always switch them off. And if your spirits start to flag, you can always turn them back on again.

Tapestries

A wall decoration that is trending with college students is a wall tapestry! They are large pieces of fabric with simple or complex patterns that you can hang on a plain wall to give your space more than just a pop of color.  If you want tie-dye, your favorite animals, or a mandala, you will have your pick of tapestries. They make great backdrops for group photos and selfies as well!

Color

Color is a really important element to your wall decoration. Color psychology dates all the way back to the early 19th century, with the ideas of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who published the book “Theory of Colours.” Each color evokes a different emotion or state of being, so you want to use colors that will encourage the kinds of moods and attitudes you want to adopt. Whether you use photo frames of the same color, have photographs clustered that all feature the same colors, a wall hanging in that color, you name it, make sure the colors you are using invoke the right aura for your space.

According to FresHome.Com, these are what colors mean to your psyche:

“Red: Symbolizes power and passion. It can be used to warm up spaces and make them feel more intimate.

Orange: Offers a jolt of energy and innovation. It’s best used as an accent because too much can leave people feeling overwhelmed.

Yellow: Associated with happiness, creation, and creativity. It works well in combination with a calming neutral and in rooms with lots of natural light to create a peaceful environment.

Green: Known for its soothing qualities. Green is the perfect choice for a foyer or entryway because it eases the transition from the outdoors.

Blue: Perpetuates feelings of calm and freshness. It’s a good fit for high traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Purple: Connotes royalty and luxury. Purple is a great choice for formal living rooms or master bedrooms because it adds an air of lush sophistication.

Gray: Gives a sense of relaxation and serenity. Use gray in spaces like home offices or bathrooms.

Brown: Like green, brown’s natural roots give it a relaxing touch. Choose it for rooms where the family gathers and furniture groupings that will incite conversation.

Black: An assertion of power. Use black for statement pieces that you want to draw the eye.

White: Relates a sense of cleanliness and purity. It is great for defining a space but use white in conjunction with other colors since too much reads as sterile.”
